The 'Andy Griffith Show' actor reportedly had a heart attack a day before he died and passed away at 7 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

He was 86.

His family released a statement citing an 'unspecified illness' as his cause of death.

Griffith's wife, Cindi Griffith said, "Andy was a person of incredibly strong Christian faith and was prepared for the day he would be called home to his Lord."

His former co-star Ron Howard shared his condolences on Twitter.

"His pursuit of excellence and the joy he took in creating served generations and shaped my life."

Griffith was 86.
