My take on 'Accidental Racist'
I'm sure that you have heard the new song, 'Accidental Racist,' by Brad Paisley and L.L Cool J. If you have not then you should. The song is a failed attempt to end the racial divide in America. Country star Brad Paisley sings about his love for the Confederacy, despite its' turbulent past, while LL Cool J compares a Confederate Flag to a Du-rag.
It seems like an African American has been fooled into undermining the effect of their past again. All for the love of love, I guess ? I admire them for trying, but I am tired of being told to forget what my ancestors went through.
As an African American women, I can admit that the struggle of my ancestors has made me everything that I am and to constantly hear that I should let it go baffles me. Why should I let it go? How is that benefiting me and my future descendants? Would that not be giving power to those who oppress me ?
I have forgiven my oppressors, but I will never forget my story. I will build off of my past and I will continue to fight for the lives of minority people. Urging these people to forget is a trick of those in power. Why would I forget when Los Angeles is one of the most segregated places in the world? Why would I forget when 80% of the people I see in the hood are black? Where does this poverty came from?
Stop quoting textbooks that were created to keep you in the dark. Educate your world. Educate your community. Educate yourself!
That is the only way.
