Mississippi child cured of HIV

Scientists announced that a baby born with HIV appears to have been cured.

The patient, a 2 year old from Mississippi, has gone without medication for a year without any sign of the disease.

"I just felt like this baby was at a higher-than-normal risk , and deserved our best shot," said Pediatric HIV Specialist Dr. Hannah Gay.

Gay treated the baby with a three drug infusion, within the first 30 hours of its' birth, that apparently erased the HIV before it could permanate.

"We can't promise to cure babies who are infected," Gay said. "We can promise to prevent the vast majority of transmissions if the moms are tested during every pregnancy."

Over 3 million children were living with HIV in 2011.
