Doc Watson dies in North Carolina
Doc Watson, the blind guitar picking legend, died on Tuesday.
He was hospitalized after falling in his home and died at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Watson was known for his guitar picking skills and helped to make the guitar a first class instrument in the 50s.
"My real intent in music was the old 78 records and the sound of the music," he said. "I liked it and began to realize that one of the main sounds on those records I loved was the guitar."
The guitar player earned 8 Grammys, including the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.
"There may not be a serious, committed baby boomer alive who didn't at some point in his or her youth try to spend a few minutes at least trying to learn to pick a guitar like Don Watson," Former President Clinton said while awarding Watson with the National Medal of Arts.
He was 89.
